Scott Wolf Diagnoses Family to Their Dismay After Playing 4 TV Doctors

Scott Wolf might not hold a medical degree, but after portraying doctors in four different TV series, he can’t help but offer diagnoses at home — much to his family’s annoyance.

“I’ve played a doctor four times. I feel like I deserve an honorary degree,” Wolf, 56, quipped in an exclusive interview with Us Weekly while promoting his latest role in Fox’s Doc. “Luckily for [my family], they don’t actually come to me for medical advice.”

Before stepping into the shoes of Dr. Richard Miller in Doc, Wolf built a history of playing medical professionals on Everwood, The Nine, and The Night Shift.

“I do diagnose family members sometimes, to their great annoyance,” Wolf admitted with a laugh. “One perk of acting is immersing yourself in different worlds. Even if you’re not a real doctor, parts of the experience stick with you.”

Honoring Real-Life Heroes

Wolf stressed the importance of representing real doctors authentically. “It’s crucial to me and everyone involved in this production that we honor the incredible work of these life-saving heroes.”

Fox’s Doc, premiering Tuesday, January 7, draws inspiration from the Italian series Nelle tue mani. The storyline follows a doctor who loses her memory in a car accident, only to wake up and find her life profoundly altered. Alongside Wolf, the cast includes Molly Parker, Omar Metwally, Amirah Vann, Jon Ecker, Anya Banerjee, and Patrick Walker.

“Out of all the doctors I’ve played, this character in Doc is my favorite because of his complexity,” Wolf said. “I’ve explored various medical settings, but this role is by far the most engaging, fun, and emotionally demanding. Returning to Fox after my time on Party of Five feels like coming full circle.”

Embracing the Challenge

Despite portraying a flawed character in Doc, Wolf enjoys the depth of the role.

“Actors always find empathy and justification for the characters they portray. In this case, Richard isn’t a bad person. He’s a good man caught in unfortunate circumstances. His response to those challenges is relatable to anyone.”

Wolf teased that Doc promises twists that will keep viewers hooked. “The writing is fantastic, and as someone who loves medical dramas, I find this show incredibly compelling. It’s full of surprises and rich character development.”

He added, “Sometimes shows take a while to build, but even after the first episode, you’ll feel deeply invested. I’d be thrilled to play any character in this series.”

Catch Doc on Fox every Tuesday at 9 p.m. ET, with new episodes available to stream on Hulu the following day.
