Sebastian Stan made history at the 82nd Annual Golden Globes by securing his first-ever Golden Globe Award for Best Performance by a Male Actor in a Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy. The star-studded event took place at The Beverly Hilton in Beverly Hills, California, on January 5, 2025.
Stan’s remarkable performance in “A Different Man” earned him the prestigious accolade, but it was his powerful acceptance speech that left a lasting impression. Addressing social biases and misconceptions about disability and disfigurement, Stan urged for greater representation and acceptance in mainstream media.
Championing Inclusivity Through Storytelling
In Aaron Schimberg’s thought-provoking film, Stan portrays Edward, an actor with neurofibromatosis—a genetic disorder that causes tumors to develop on nerves, affecting both the skin and bones. Sharing the screen with Adam Pearson, who lives with neurofibromatosis in real life, the film delves deep into themes of identity and societal perception.
During his speech, Stan took a moment to honor Schimberg and Pearson, expressing his gratitude for their trust and collaboration.
“Aaron Schimberg and Adam Pearson at home, I wish you were here. I share this with you. Thank you for your trust,” Stan began. “Our ignorance and discomfort around disability and disfigurement has to end now. We have to normalize it and continue to expose ourselves [and our children] to it. Encourage acceptance. One way we can do that is by continuing to champion stories that are inclusive.”
A Nod to “The Apprentice” and Complex Storylines
Stan’s journey this award season doesn’t end with “A Different Man.” He also received a Best Actor in a Drama nomination for his portrayal of a young Donald Trump in the political biopic “The Apprentice.” Reflecting on the challenging narratives of both films, Stan highlighted the importance of addressing difficult subjects through cinema.
“This was not an easy movie to make. Neither is ‘The Apprentice,’ the other film that I was lucky to be a part of and that I am proud to be in,” he shared. “These are tough subject matters, but these films are real and necessary. We can’t be afraid and look away.”
Stan also acknowledged the unwavering support from his team, A24, his longtime manager, and his family.
Reflecting on the Journey
In a post-nomination interview with Variety, Stan expressed his amazement at receiving dual nominations.
“I’m sort of stunned. Both films have had such interesting, difficult journeys. We did ‘A Different Man’ two years ago, and it got shelved because of the strike. The fact that we’re still here—and ‘Apprentice’ was a film trying to be made for five years—this is extremely humbling and gratifying.”
Stan’s impressive body of work has been consistently recognized by the industry. His portrayal of Tommy Lee in Hulu’s “Pam & Tommy” previously earned him a Golden Globe nomination, showcasing his versatility and commitment to complex roles.
A Night of Recognition and Celebration
This year, Stan is among the elite few actors to receive two acting nominations. Selena Gomez and Kate Winslet join him in this distinguished category, solidifying Stan’s reputation as one of Hollywood’s leading talents.
In the Best Actor in a Musical or Comedy category, Stan triumphed over notable contenders, including Jesse Eisenberg (“A Real Pain”), Hugh Grant (“Heretic”), Gabriel LaBelle (“Saturday Night”), Jesse Plemons (“Kinds of Kindness”), and Glen Powell (“Hit Man”).
“A Different Man” – A Critical Darling
Since its debut at Sundance Film Festival, “A Different Man” has captivated audiences and critics alike. Stan’s performance earned him the Silver Bear for Best Leading Performance at the Berlin Film Festival, while the film clinched the Best Picture prize at the Gotham Awards.
As Sebastian Stan continues to rise, his dedication to telling authentic, socially significant stories remains unwavering. His win at the Golden Globes signals not only a personal milestone but also a broader shift toward inclusivity and empathy in the film industry.
