Hwang Dong Hyuk Shares His Reaction to the Unexpected Recognition
Netflix’s globally acclaimed series ‘Squid Game’ has once again made waves, securing a Golden Globe nomination for its much-anticipated second season. This recognition, however, came as a surprise to the show’s creator, Hwang Dong Hyuk.
In an exclusive interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Hwang revealed his astonishment, expressing that he was “shocked and surprised” by the nomination, especially since the second season has yet to be released.
“I never expected it to be nominated before its premiere. Being among the six selected works already feels like a win. I am deeply satisfied with this acknowledgment,” Hwang shared.
Hwang candidly admitted he didn’t foresee such recognition for season two due to the incomplete narrative. “The story isn’t finished, and the message I intend to deliver hasn’t fully unfolded. I believed this would make winning an award challenging at this stage,” he explained.
The director emphasized that for him, true recognition comes when the entire story arc is presented. “For a nomination of this caliber, the complete story needs to reach the audience. Since that hasn’t happened yet, I had no expectations,” he added.
Interestingly, this year marks the first time Hwang will attend the Golden Globes. The director skipped the previous ceremony amid diversity-related controversies and pandemic restrictions.
“During the first season, COVID-19 and the Golden Globes boycott over diversity concerns overlapped. I couldn’t attend, and only actor Oh Young Soo received an award on behalf of the series. This time, I am thrilled and grateful to have the opportunity to be part of the event,” Hwang stated.
Reflecting on the future, Hwang hinted at ambitious goals for the third season. “I personally don’t set high expectations for awards, but if I were to aim for recognition, it would likely be with season three, once the story reaches its full conclusion.”
Squid Game continues to captivate audiences worldwide, and with this unexpected Golden Globe nod, anticipation for season two has reached new heights.
