Acheson recalled a conversation with his agent before stepping onto the Elf set. “I was told it was just one line with Will Ferrell,” he said. “I thought, why not? It’s always great to work with someone like Will.” Originally, Acheson’s only line was “work release,” but everything changed when Favreau asked for more.
Improvisation at Its Finest
Encouraged to let loose, Acheson crafted one of the most memorable moments by telling Ferrell’s character he was 26 years old with “nothing to show for it.” The hilarious line, delivered as the two shared whiskey in the mailroom, struck comedic gold. Acheson laughed, recalling the experience. “I was actually 46 at the time—and even that felt like a stretch! The producers thought no one would buy it, but Favreau fought to keep it in.”

Favreau insisted the joke was perfect as-is, standing by the scene despite pushback from others. “Jon said that’s what made it funny. Thankfully, he kept me in,” Acheson added. “It turned out to be a career highlight for me.”

After Elf, Acheson’s career saw new momentum. He appeared in Hot Rod (2008), Watchmen (2009), and TV series like Psych and The X-Files. His most recent role was in Peter Pan and Wendy (2023), showing that even brief moments in iconic films can lead to lasting success.
